Petroperú in Crisis: Pedro Gamio Warns of Market Loss and Lack of Government Support

The crisis at Petroperú is deepening, according to Pedro Gamio, former Deputy Minister of Energy, who warns that the absence of a rescue plan from the government is pushing the state-owned company into a critical situation. Gamio emphasizes that Petroperú is losing market share daily to private companies and is facing serious liquidity issues. “Petroperú is being left to die of starvation,” he stated in a recent interview. Despite having recorded a positive EBITDA in 2025, the oil company has not received the necessary state support to operate normally. Gamio argues that political decisions have over-indebted Petroperú, which has contributed 80% of the profits to Peru throughout its history. “The situation is complicated and requires a deep restructuring,” he added. Gamio proposed that the state provide a guarantee to restructure short-term debt and secure the necessary resources for the operation of the Talara refinery. “This is not just a simple disbursement; major surgery is needed,” he concluded. The lack of concrete actions continues to leave Petroperú in “intensive care,” while importers benefit from the market. The current situation could lead to a price increase for consumers, affecting the country’s economy, as has already happened in other nations.
