Water Management in Peru: Key Strategies to Reduce Water Loss and Ensure Supply

Water management in Peru has become a crucial issue, especially in the context of climate change and urban growth. Magda Curi, a water management specialist at Veolia Peru, emphasizes that it is vital to address not only access to water but the entire commercial cycle that involves its capture, treatment, and distribution. “When we talk about water management, we refer to the whole process, from capture to billing,” Curi comments.

One of the main challenges is water loss in distribution networks. It is estimated that more than 30% of water is lost before reaching the consumer, due to leaks and failures in infrastructure. This situation is critical, as it limits supply for the population. Climate change also exacerbates the situation. Severe climatic phenomena have caused prolonged water cuts in Metropolitan Lima, as evidenced in recent years.

To tackle these challenges, Veolia Peru implements innovative technologies, such as helium injection in pipes, which allows for the localization of underground leaks. Additionally, the company promotes the Green Up program, which aims to accelerate ecological transformation and encourage sustainable water use. “It is everyone’s responsibility to care for this essential resource,” concludes Curi.
